Mercer downs Charleston Southern on Tuesday night
Â
Hughes had put the Bears (17-4) on top, 2-1, in the third inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Jozsef Rohrbacher.
Â
However, Peyton Mills connected on a solo home run in the top of the fourth to allow the Buccaneers (10-13) to pull even.
Â
In the fifth inning, David Burke and Colby Thomas both singled with one out. Hughes then ripped the first pitch of his at-bat into center field, plating Burke from second to give Mercer a 3-2 advantage.
Â
The Bears proceeded to score three runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and three more in the eighth to pull away from Charleston Southern.
Â
The Buccaneers used 10 pitchers in the non-conference tilt.

Sam Massey (1-1) was handed the loss after giving up the decisive run in the fifth.
Â
Mercer logged double-digit hits for the 12th time this season, as the Bears registered 11 in the win.
Â
Hughes was one of four Mercer batters to finish with two hits. Trevor Austin, Antonio Brown and Burke also had two hits apiece. Bill Knight had Mercer's only extra-base hit of the evening, an eighth-inning two-run homer.

Â
Ryan Lobus (2-1) picked up the victory after allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits in 5.0 innings of work. He also fanned three.
Â
Wesley Franklin and Jaxon O'Neal slammed the door, as each hurled a pair of shutout stanzas. Both bullpen arms also struck out three batters.
Â
Mercer will return to the diamond Wednesday in another mid-week affair against Jacksonville State. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
