Bears use eight-run fourth in 17-10 road win

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Mercer rode an eight-run fourth-inning to a 17-10 win over Jacksonville State Wednesday night at Jim Case Stadium.

The Bears (33-8) scored 14 of their 17 runs in a four-inning span beginning with Treyson Hughes' RBI double in the third inning.

Mercer then sent 11 batters to the plate in the big fourth inning. Collin Price hit a grand slam and Blake Schmitt belted a two-run homer to help push the Bears out to a 9-2 advantage.

Mercer scored four runs in the fifth to increase its lead to 13-2.

The Gamecocks (18-21) posted their own big inning in the bottom of the frame, plating eight runs to pull within three.

However, the Bears picked up an unearned run in the top of the sixth and the plated three more insurance tallies in the final stanza to pull away.

Mercer posted 13 total hits in the win. Five Bears had two hits each, led by Price's 2 for 5 performance that included a grand slam and five RBIs. David Burke was 2 for 5 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs, while Schmitt was 2 for 4 with a homer and drove in a pair. Hughes and Will Mapes also joined the trio with two hits apiece.

The Bears will return to Southern Conference action this weekend with a trip to ETSU. The three-game set opens Friday at 1 p.m. in Johnson City, Tennessee.
