Mercer dispatches VMI 4-1
MACON, Ga. – Bill Knight and Treyson Hughes each hit solo home runs to lead Mercer to a 4-1 victory over VMI Saturday afternoon at OrthoGeorgia Park.

Knight led off the third inning by belting his 14th homer of the season. It also marked his third consecutive game with a round tripper.

Hughes doubled the lead in the sixth, reaching out to drive his 13th homer of the season over the wall in center field.
Â
Josh Farmer (6-1) held the Keydets (16-34, 6-11 SoCon) in check after tossing six scoreless innings.
Â
VMI started the seventh with back-to-back singles. Farmer then handed the ball over to Jackson Kelley, who gave up a single and a sacrifice fly out of the bullpen. Kelley buckled down and struck out the next two hitters to hold the lead.

The Bears (37-13, 10-7 SoCon) tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth.

Mercer opened the panel with three consecutive hits, including back-to-back doubles by William Mapes and Angelo DiSpigna. Antonio Brown then drove in DiSpigna after ripping a single through the right side of the infield.

Kelley secured his sixth save of the campaign after retiring the Keydets in order in the ninth. The sidewinding righty fanned four over the final three innings of the game.

Farmer (6-1) received the win after giving up only one run in six-plus frames.

Tyler Kaltreider (3-5) was handed the loss, as the righthander allowed three runs in seven-plus stanzas.
