Bears fall, 5-1, to Samford on Friday
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mercer was limited to only four hits and one run in a 5-1 loss to Samford Friday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Stadium.Â
The Bears (38-16, 11-9 SoCon) scored their lone run in the eighth inning on Collin Price's sacrifice fly to center field.Â
The Bulldogs (26-26, 12-8 SoCon) not only clinched the series but also moved one game ahead of Mercer in the league standings.Â
Samford took control of the game in the second inning, scoring four times with two outs.Â
Garrett Howe broke the scoring seal with a two-run triple down the right-field line. He was followed by Towns King's two-run homer over the wall in left-center to stake the Bulldogs to a 4-0 advantage.Â
The Bears went without a hit in the first three innings.Â
Treyson Hughes broke up the no-hit bid with a single to right field with one out in the fourth. Price was then hit by a pitch and Jozsef Rohrbacher walked to load the bases with one out. However, Samford starting pitcher Michael Ross retired the next two hitters to end the threat.Â
The Bulldogs added their fifth run in the sixth, when King reached on an infield single that pushed Blake Bortak across the plate.Â
Ross (6-1) went eight innings to earn the win on the mound for Samford.Â
Josh Farmer (6-2) was handed the loss, as the righty yielded five runs on nine hits and three walks.Â
The two teams will close out league play Saturday in the series finale at 1 p.m.
