Bears represented on all-league teams
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Multiple Mercer student-athletes earned Southern Conference postseason honors when the league office released its baseball all-league honorees.
A pair of Bears – Bill Knight and Colby Thomas – were chosen as first team members by the league's coaches for their 2022 seasons. Jackson Kelley and Collin Price followed with nods to the second team.
From the media, Kelley and Knight were named to the all-first team while Price and Thomas were chosen to the second team. Treyson Hughes was the lone Bear to appear on the all-freshman squad.
Bill Knight | First Team (Coaches and Media) | Outfield
Knight, a junior from Perkins, Ga., is hitting .338 with 15 home runs and batted in 60 runs this season – tops in the SoCon. His average from the plate leads the team and is 10th in the league. At the dish, he's connected on a team-best 78 hits, which is third in the conference.
Colby Thomas | First Team (Coaches), Second Team (Media) | Outfield
Thomas, a sophomore from Valdosta, Ga., hitting .325 with 17 home runs – a mark that is second best in the SoCon, has batted in 45 runs and a league-leading .728 slugging percentage. In an April win at Seton Hall, he slugged a pair of home runs to contribute to the 14-2 score.
Jackson Kelley | First Team (Media), Second Team (Coaches) | Relief Pitcher
Kelley, a junior out of Marietta, Ga. - the league's Pitcher of the Month for April - fanned 75 and walked only 16 and gave up 29 hits over 52.2 frames pitched. He picked up six saves in addition to his spotless 6-0 record. He ranks sixth in strikeouts (75), third in strikeouts looking (27), fifth in wins (6) and third in saves (6).
Collin Price | Second Team (Coaches and Media) | Catcher/Outfield
Price, a junior from Suwanee, Ga., plays both catcher and in the outfield. He is hitting .320 with a .644 slugging percentage, has reached base safely 46% of the time, driven in 57 runs, a team and conference-leading 18 homers and 62 hits. He also leads the Bears and the conference with 48 free passes to first. Defensively, he leads the SoCon with 441 putouts.
Treyson Hughes | All-Freshman | Outfield
Hughes, from Warner Robins, Ga., earned all-freshman honors. The first-year player made an instant impact from the plate, making contact 67 times and registering a .316 average. The Warner Robins, Ga. native slugged 14 home runs and batted in 52 runs – which placed him sixth in the conference.
Mercer will open play in the 2022 SoCon Baseball Tournament from Fluor Field on Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m.
