Spivey Qualifies for U.S. Amateur

MACON, Ga. – Mercer men's golfer Jay Spivey, a senior who played locally while at First Presbyterian Day School in Macon, qualified this week for the 122^nd U.S. Amateur. Spivey finished at five-under-par 139 and finished second on Tuesday out of 122 competitors at Statesboro, Georgia. Jay's father Scott caddied for the Mercer golfer at the qualifier.

"I am very proud of Jay for qualifying for the U.S. Amateur," men's golf coach Jason Payne said. "Being able to compete in the biggest amateur tournament in the world is exciting and a big accomplishment. I know there will be many Mercer Bears following along and wishing Jay the best."

More than 8,000 golfers around the world are attempting to qualify for one of the 312 spots in the field. The tournament will take place Aug. 15-21 in Paramus, New Jersey, at Ridgewood Country Club and Arcola Country Club.
