Fans got to meet fall sports student-athletes
MACON, Ga. - Although summer is coming to an end, fall sports are right around the corner. Mercer fans showed their excitement on a beautiful Saturday afternoon on campus at Heritage Hall in the University Center, to take part in Fan Appreciation Day.
The event included the opportunity to meet fall sports student-athletes and get their autograph. Posters with the 2022 schedule for the football, men's soccer, women's soccer and volleyball programs were available to fans. Young Mercer fans were excited to see Toby the Bear in attendance as well.
"I brought my two boys - they are are seven and four - and they are having a blast," Mercer fan Dustin Hodges said. "It's great for the community and I only have good things to say about it."
Families of student-athletes also came to check out the event. Among those included student-athlete and offensive tackle John Thomas' family. Thomas' mom, Monique, was glad to be able to make it to the event this year after not being able to last year. "It's exciting!" Mrs. Thomas said. "It's nice to get their autographs and to see all the families out here. I'm having a good time."
Freshman, Richard Eusery Jr., a defensive lineman on the football team also had family in attendance. His dad, Richard Eusery Sr., thought it was great to have all of the fall sports teams in attendance. "Having the players out and available and not just football, but fall sports, its good to get to know everybody," Eusery Sr. said.
Fall sports are about to begin for the teams in attendance. The football team opens the 2022 season at 7 p.m., on Aug. 27 against Morehead State at Five Star Stadium. The Bears received their highest-ever preseason projection by the league coaches and media members. Mercer was projected to finish second by the media and third by the league's coaches.
Women's soccer begins the regular season on Thursday, Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. at Campbell University. The defending SoCon Tournament champion men's soccer team begins its 2022 regular season at 7 p.m. on Aug. 25 at home against Winthrop. The volleyball team will enter the 2022 campaign as defending SoCon champions. The Bears will open play at their first tournament at Florida Atlantic. Head Coach Derek Schroeder's squad will begin play on Aug. 26 against Lehigh at noon, before closing the day with a 7 p.m. battle against FAU.
