Mercer Players Recognized on Phil Steele All American and SoCon All Conference Teams

Preseason honors continue to roll for Bears

MACON, Ga. – More preseason honors were announced Wednesday for the Mercer football team as the Bears continue first-week practices at Five Star Stadium. The Phil Steele All American team included a member of the Mercer special teams and the Phil Steele All Southern Conference team saw 13 Bears recognized at 17 positions.

Named to the Phil Steele All American team was punt returner Devron Harper, who was listed on the 4^th team. Harper and defensive back Lance Wise were previously named preseason All Americans by StatsPerform.

Included on the Phil Steele SoCon All Conference team were: 1^st team -- linebacker Isaac Dowling, defensive back Wise and Harper as the league's best punt returner; 2^nd team – quarterback Fred Payton, wide receiver Ty James, offensive lineman John Thomas, defensive linemen Solomon Zubairu and Chris Hill, linebacker Ken Standley and punter Trey Turk; 3^rd team – Harper at wide receiver, kick returner and all-purpose; 4^th team – tight end Drake Starks, offensive lineman Riley Adcock, defensive back Richie Coffey and kicker Devin Folser.

Last week, Thomas, Wise, Dowling, James, Turk and Zubairu were voted onto the Preseason All-Southern Conference teams at SoCon Football Media Day.

The Bears' squad has also received national preseason recognition for the first time ever being ranked No. 16 by The CFB Network, No. 17 by Athlon Sports and No. 18 by The Blue Bloods.

Mercer kicks off the 2022 season on Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. at Five Star Stadium hosting Morehead State.
