Jonsson Takes Individual Title at World Amateur
Macon, Ga.--Mercer men's golfer Tobias Jonsson won the individual championship at the International Golf Federation World Amateur Team Championship held Aug. 31- Sept. 2 in Paris France. Â
Jonsson birdied the final hole of his last round to win the title. He shot a 17-under par 269 over the Le Golf National Course in Paris (site of the 2018 Ryder Cup). Highlighting his tournament, was a third round 64. The Bears' junior finished one shot ahead of Japan's Taiga Semikawa for the individual title. He topped a field of 216 golfers.Â
His effort led Team Sweden to a second-place finish in the team competition for the Eisenhower Trophy. Team Sweden had a total of 542, just one shot behind Italy's 541. The United States finished third out of the 72 teams at 545.Â
"This is just an absolute great accomplishment for Tobias," Bears' men's golf coach Jason Payne said. "Winning a tournament like this can be a great momentum builder going into the season."Â
