Mercer opens season at home on Nov. 7 against Middle Tennessee State
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's basketball team will open its season at home on Monday, Nov. 7, against Middle Tennessee State. The team unveiled its 2022-23 schedule Thursday.

The Bears will play a 15-game non-conference slate before getting in to SoCon play. Nine of the 15 non-conference games are on the road.

"We have one of the most challenging non-conference schedules that we've had since I've been here," head coach Susie Gardner said. "We have seven returners and seven new players. Out of the 14, only four of those players played a significant number of minutes for us last year. We'll find out very early what our strengths are and the [non-conference] schedule will prepare us for another intense SoCon schedule."

After the home opener, the Bears have away games at UCF (Nov. 10), Bethune Cookman (Nov. 12) and Wake Forest (Nov. 17), before returning home to play Georgia Southwestern (Nov. 20).

Thanksgiving week, Mercer will head west to play in the 2022 Las Vegas Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Bears will play two games in the Invitational. On Friday, Nov. 25, Mercer will face Colorado State. The next day, the Bears will play Texas Tech.

"We were given a great opportunity by the Las Vegas Tournament committee," Coach Gardner said. "It was a scenario where we thought we would be treated really well and also get some competition outside of our immediate region.

The Bears will begin their conference play on Thursday, Jan. 5 when they welcome UNCG to Hawkins Arena.

The Bears continued their championship ways in the 2021-22 season they finished (23-7, 13-1 SoCon) and claimed their fourth Southern Conference Tournament title in the last five years, advancing to the NCAA Tournament to face top-seeded UConn in Storrs, Connecticut. Additionally, it was Mercer's sixth regular season SoCon crown in the last seven years. The Bears defeated Furman 73-54 in the SoCon Championship to earn a trip to the Big Dance.

Mercer returns several key players this season, including three of its top four scorers from last season. One of those players is Amoria Neal-Tysor, a First Team All-Conference player who led the Bears with 16.5 points per game last season. SoCon Freshman of the Year, Erin Houpt, is back after shooting better than 40% from three-point range. Jaron Dougherty returns after earning Second Team All-Conference honors last season. She finished third on the team in points per game (10.7) and second in rebounds per game (6.4).

Conference Play
The home-away format of league scheduling will see all seven conference opponents come to Macon. Conference play will determine the seeding for the SoCon Tournament, set to take place in Asheville, North Carolina, from March 2-5.
