Carter Sanford Earns National and SoCon Player of the Week Honors

Catcher batted .667 scoring home runs in all four games of the week
MACON, Ga. – Carter Sanford was named a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week and the Southern Conference Player of the Week for his performance during the week of April 17-23. The Collegiate Baseball newspaper selects a handful of players who had breakout performances during the week. The SoCon award was selected by the league office.
Sanford batted .667 on the week, going 8-for-12. The catcher scored a home run in each of the four games to reach five total this season. Sanford logged eight runs and nine RBI.
The junior's home run against Georgia State scored the only three runs against the Panthers. On Friday, Sanford hit a solo shot in the first game of the doubleheader against VMI. He did not start the second game but hit a home run in his first at-at after entering the lineup. Sanford capped off the stellar week with a pair of two-RBI singles and a home run on Sunday, helping the Bears take the series over the Keydets.
The Fayette, Alabama, native set new career highs in hits (4), runs (4), and RBI (4) on Sunday. Four hits in a single game are also a team high this season. Five home runs on the season are the most in a single season for Sanford after scoring five total across his previous two seasons.
This is Sanford's first SoCon Player of the Week honor, and it is the first for Mercer this season. Sanford is the first Bear to earn a national player of the week honor this season, and it is the first of his career.
Mercer's next game is on Tuesday, April 25 at 6 p.m. against Georgia Tech at Russ Chandler Stadium.
