Mercer accepted invite to play in inaugural National Golf Invitational
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's golf team has accepted an invite to the inaugural National Golf Invitational (NGI) held at Ak-Chin Dunes Golf Club near Phoenix, Arizona.
Â
The tournament, hosted by Golfweek, features an invitation only field using a cumulative average of both the Golfweek/Sagarin and Golfstat rankings along with a committee decision on teams that had strong regular seasons. The tournament will feature a maximum 18 teams playing 54 holes of stroke play.
Â
The NGI was approved last May and will feature men's and women's competition. The women will play first from May 11-14, 2023. Organizers are working to finalize the full field which will be unveiled in the coming days.
Mercer is ranked 101st in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings and 99th in the GolfStat rankings. The Bears finished higher than eight top 100 teams in tournaments throughout the season.Â
Mercer won two tournaments this season in the Mercer Invitational in the fall and the Brickyard Collegiate in April. The Bears went on to finish runner-up at the SoCon Championship.
Two Mercer golfers in Mikayla Dubnik and Carol Pyon each earned tournament wins this season. Dubnik won the Mercer Invitational with a 2-under 214 and Pyon won the Brickyard Collegiate with a 4-over 220.
"We are excited to be awarded a postseason opportunity and to play in the Inaugural National Golf Invitational," said Mercer head coach Michele Drinkard. "This will be a chance for us to celebrate our success this year and to compete against teams that we normally would not have an opportunity to compete against in the regular season."
Â
The NGI Tournament has been something that was brought up and discussed between Golfweek Tournament Director Lance Ringler and college programs around the country. "We are also very grateful that we (College Golf) have an ally in Golfweek's Lance Ringler and his vison and persistence to keep the idea of an additional post season alive year after year," said Drinkard."
Â
"I personally can remember talking about this with Lance 6 to 7 years ago and to now be bringing our team to the Inaugural tournament is a bit surreal. This is a great day for College Golf."
Under coach Drinkard, this is Mercer's second postseason appearance with the other coming in 2021 in the NCAA Regionals.
