GREENSBORO, Ga. - Saturday saw Mercer pick up where it left off from Friday, as the Bears went five shots lower and continue to lead after two rounds at the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational from Great Waters Golf Course.
The Mercer women's golf team leads the 14-team field by 10 strokes. The Bears shot a 1-over 289 on Saturday and are 7-over 583 for the tournament and lead second place Western Kentucky by 10 strokes.
Mikayla Dubnik and Camilla Järvelä each turned in another solid round as they finished in red figures as Dubnik shot a 2-under 70 and Järvelä shot a 1-under 71 in their second rounds. Dubnik is 2-under for the tournament and enters the final round Sunday in a tie for first place with Addie Westbrook of Western Kentucky. Järvelä is right behind Dubnik and is in third place just one stroke back at 1-under for the tournament.
"Our team goal was to play every shot with focused intensity and they did," said head coach Michele Drinkard. "Today was definitely one of the best rounds we have played this season in high winds. Great Waters played like two totally different golf courses today and we knew that was going to happen. When we made the turn the wind off the lake was gusting upwards to 25-30mph at times. Tomorrow brings on a new challenge and I am excited for this team to be in this position."
Ella Mäki-Tanila turned in her best round so far this Spring season with a 1-over 73. She sits in a tie for 25th at 9-over 153. Katie Scheck carded a second consecutive round of 3-over 75. She enters the final round eight shots back and tied for 12th.
Mercer leads the field on the par 4s and par 5s. The Bears are 16-over on the par 4s, five strokes better than the next closest team. Mercer is 6-under on the par 5s. Mercer's 24 birdies through two rounds are second most in the field.
Järvelä and Dubnik lead the field on the par 4s as Järvelä is 1-under and Dubnik is even par on them. Järvelä leads the field with 28 pars through 36 holes.
The final round on Sunday will begin at 10 a.m. ET from a shotgun start.
