MACON - Hours removed from finishing off a monstrous week at the plate, junior infielder Parker Lester has been named as the Southern Conference Player of the Week.
Lester registered nine hits in 14 at-bats across four starts last week, and helped lead the Bears to a 4-0 record on the week, including a road defeat of Kennesaw State defeating Kennesaw State as well as a weekend home sweep of Monmouth. He hit .643 at the plate with four doubles - one in each game - two home runs and eight RBI. In the series finale on Sunday, Lester hit two homers and drove in five runs. He tallied a .485 on-base percentage and a 1.357 slugging percentage (1.842 OPS) across the four-game stretch.
Lester's benefits to the Bears do not stop with the bat. An everyday starter at first base, he holds a 1.000 fielding percentage, including 24 putouts last week. He was also the end stop on two double plays by MU.
A Calhoun, Ga., native, Lester played his first two collegiate seasons at Miami (Ohio) before transferring to Mercer.
The Bears (6-1) will be back in action again on Tuesday and Wednesday when they host a rare midweek series against Florida A&M (4-3) at Hawkins Field.
