GREENVILLE, S.C. – Jackson Cherry, Colton Cosper, Ty Dalley and Wes Franklin each grabbed a spot on the Preseason All-Southern Conference squad, while the Mercer baseball team was projected to finish second in the race for the 2024 SoCon regular season title, in a preseason poll of the league's head coaches that was released on Thursday afternoon.
Defending regular season and tournament champion Samford raked in seven first-place votes as the unanimous favorite to bring home their second-straight league crown. The Bulldogs amassed 42 points in the tally to edge out Mercer (42 points) for the top spot in the listing, while Wofford collected the other available first-place vote and a third-place position.
Cherry, a second team all-league pick last season, returns after posting a .339 batting average with 12 homers and 27 RBI in 2023, while also compiling a .711 slugging percentage. Dalley, a 2023 SoCon All-Freshman Team honoree, hit .259 with a team-best 56 RBI last season, while also ranking among league leaders with 18 home runs.
Cosper made 17 appearances and 11 starts on the hill for the Orange & Black in 2023 and amassed four wins ad 58 strikeouts in 64 innings of work, while Franklin was a key member of the bullpen as evidenced by 39 strikeouts in 34-1/3 innings pitched. He also notched a team-best eight saves.
