GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Mercer Bears (28-28) reached a 7-0 lead in the seventh inning, but could not hang on and fell 9-7 to the Samford Bulldogs (35-20) on Friday.

The Bears will play Western Carolina at 7:30 p.m. tonight. The game can be watched on ESPN+ and followed on Live Stats.

Senior Fred Wilson started the ballgame and went four shutout innings while allowing two hits, walking three and striking out six.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Junior Bradley Frye left the yard in the top of the third inning with junior Parker Lester aboard. The next inning, Ely Brown hit a 2-RBI single, and Conner Todaro hit a two-run homer to extend the lead to 6-0.

The Bears notched a run on sophomore Ty Dalley's one-out solo home run off of senior Michael Ross in the seventh inning to take a 7-0 lead but gave up nine runs in the bottom of the frame. With momentum in the Bulldogs' favor, the Bears did not overcome the blow of the eighth inning and ultimately lost 9-7.
