MACON – A dominating defensive effort that, ultimately, paved the way for Mercer's first 3-0 start in 11 years caught the attention of national voters on Monday morning as the Bears jumped up eight or more spots in both national rankings.
Â
The biggest move for Mercer (3-0, 1-0 SoCon) came in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 Poll as the Orange & Black leapt up eight spots to No. 14 in that listing. Similarly, MU made an eight-spot jump in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) FCS Coaches Poll before nestling in to the No. 16 position.
Â
Monday's rankings are the highest for the Bears since ascending all the way up to the No. 11 spot in the AFCA Top 25 following a 55-33 home win over East Tennessee State on Oct. 15, 2022. The No. 11 ranking is the highest for MU in the 50-plus seasons of the program.
Â
Chattanooga dipped nine spots to No. 23 in Monday's Stats Perform FCS Top 25, while Western Carolina jumped back into that ranking at No. 24 following Saturday's upset win over Elon. Wofford and Furman also received votes for consideration in the Stats Perform FCS release.
Â
The Mocs tumbled eight spots to No. 24 in the AFCA Top 25, while Furman, Wofford, Western Carolina and The Citadel received votes for consideration.
Â
Mercer will return home on Saturday when it suits up to battle SoCon rival The Citadel (2-1, 0-0) in a Family Weekend contest at Five Star Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by visiting MercerBears.com/Tickets.
