MACON  – The Mercer baseball team saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon, falling to Florida A&M by a score of 5-2.
Â
Bradley Frye (3-for-5) continued to swing a hot bat for the Bears with his seventh consecutive multi-hit performance. Jackson Gaspard and Kai Decker turned in excellent outings on the mound, as both struck out six hitters in three and three - 1/3 shutout innings, respectively. Garrett Workman (1-2) took the win for the Rattlers, while Lawson Cole (1-1) took the loss for the Bears.Â
Â
Gaspard cruised through the first two innings, racking up four strikeouts in two scoreless frames. In the bottom of the second, Drew Johnson got the Mercer offense going with a leadoff double before coming around to score on a sac fly from Zack Thompson, giving the Bears an early 1-0 lead.
Â
In the third, Gaspard worked another quick inning before giving way to Cole in the fourth, who tossed a scoreless frame of his own on just 10 pitches. In the home half of the fourth, Thompson put a two-out double down the left field line to get himself into the scoring position, but a flyout ended the threat.Â
Â
After managing only three hits through the first four frames, the Florida A&M bats came to life in the fifth, putting up two home runs to take a 3-1 lead. The Rattlers bats stayed hot in the sixth, slugging two more homers to extend the lead to 5-1.Â
Â
In the seventh, the Bears put together another two-out threat, as a walk and a single put runners on first and second. However, a strikeout ended the threat. Decker, who entered for the final out in the sixth inning, worked his second scoreless frame in the eighth to keep the Bears in the game.
Â
Leading off the bottom of the eighth, Parker Lester drove a double into the left field gap to put a himself in scoring position. Lester would later come around to score on a two-out error, but the Rattlers were able to limit the damage to one in the inning.Â
Â
Looking to rally in the bottom of the ninth, the Bears led off the inning with a double once again, this time from Ely Brown. However, he would be left stranded as the game ended in a 5-2 final.Â
Â
The Bears will close out the weekend tomorrow, hosting High Point at 1 p.m. Fans can get their tickets ahead of time by visiting MercerBears.com/Tickets.
