MACON – The Mercer baseball team saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon, falling to Florida A&M by a score of 5-2.
Bradley Frye (3-for-5) continued to swing a hot bat for the Bears with his seventh consecutive multi-hit performance. Jackson Gaspard and Kai Decker turned in excellent outings on the mound, as both struck out six hitters in three and three - 1/3 shutout innings, respectively. Garrett Workman (1-2) took the win for the Rattlers, while Lawson Cole (1-1) took the loss for the Bears.
Gaspard cruised through the first two innings, racking up four strikeouts in two scoreless frames. In the bottom of the second, Drew Johnson got the Mercer offense going with a leadoff double before coming around to score on a sac fly from Zack Thompson, giving the Bears an early 1-0 lead.
In the third, Gaspard worked another quick inning before giving way to Cole in the fourth, who tossed a scoreless frame of his own on just 10 pitches. In the home half of the fourth, Thompson put a two-out double down the left field line to get himself into the scoring position, but a flyout ended the threat.
After managing only three hits through the first four frames, the Florida A&M bats came to life in the fifth, putting up two home runs to take a 3-1 lead. The Rattlers bats stayed hot in the sixth, slugging two more homers to extend the lead to 5-1.
In the seventh, the Bears put together another two-out threat, as a walk and a single put runners on first and second. However, a strikeout ended the threat. Decker, who entered for the final out in the sixth inning, worked his second scoreless frame in the eighth to keep the Bears in the game.
Leading off the bottom of the eighth, Parker Lester drove a double into the left field gap to put a himself in scoring position. Lester would later come around to score on a two-out error, but the Rattlers were able to limit the damage to one in the inning.
Looking to rally in the bottom of the ninth, the Bears led off the inning with a double once again, this time from Ely Brown. However, he would be left stranded as the game ended in a 5-2 final.
The Bears will close out the weekend tomorrow, hosting High Point at 1 p.m. Fans can get their tickets ahead of time by visiting MercerBears.com/Tickets.
