MACON – Mercer right-handed pitcher Terry Busse was recognized as one of the country's top relievers on Wednesday, being one of 56 relief pitchers to be named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch list. Busse was one of two pitchers from the Southern Conference to make the list.Â
Â
Arriving in Macon ahead of the 2024 season as a transfer from Georgia Tech, Busse has emerged as a force on the back end of the Mercer bullpen. Busse has appeared in a team-high 19 games this season and recorded six saves, good for 31st in the country. Over 24.1 innings of work, Busse has allowed just 10 hits for a .119 batting average against while racking up 32 strikeouts. In addition to his six saves, "Scary Terry" has picked up wins over The Citadel and Georgia Southern, slamming the door to complete comeback victories. While he didn't get credit for the win or save, Busse was dominant in closing out Mercer's upset win over fifth-ranked Florida State, striking out three without allowing a hit across the game's final two innings.Â
Â
Prior to his time with the Bears, Busse earned recognition as one of the top closers in the ACC in 2023, posting nine saves over 22 appearances. A Perfect Game Midseason First Team All-American in 2023, he struck out 65 batters in 51 innings across two seasons with the Yellow Jackets. The native of Valparaiso, Ind. spent the 2022 season at John A. Logan Community College, striking out 44 in 27.1 innings with a 3.29 ERA to help the Vols to a 41-17 record.Â
