MACON – Sophomore outfielder Ely Brown was selected in the 12th round of the 2025 MLB Draft (346th overall pick) by the Chicago White Sox on Monday, becoming the 34th Bear to be selected in the MLB Draft under head coach Craig Gibson.
Â
Brown, a native of Savannah, Ga., established himself as one of the most reliable outfielders in the Southern Conference this season. Brown started all 60 games in center field for the Bears and hit .320 with a team-best .459 on base percentage as the team's primary leadoff hitter. His elite strike zone recognition and bat-to-ball skills helped him walk 46 times, the second-most in the Southern Conference, while striking out just 32 times in 226 at-bats. Brown's 21 multi-hit games were the second most on the team and included five three-hit games and one four-hit game. The speedy center fielder also led the Bears with 55 runs scored while displaying a high-level glove in the outfield.Â
Â
In his first season on campus in 2024, Brown appeared in 32 games while making 14 starts, including the final 14 games of the season. Brown hit .242 in his freshman campaign while getting on base at a .383 clip before tearing up the California Premier Collegiate League over the summer, leading the league with a .398 batting average.Â
Â
Brown's selection marks the fourth year in a row in which at least one Bear has been taken in the MLB Draft. He is the 50th draft pick in program history.Â
