Volleyball Opens Season At CofC Classic

MACON, Ga. - The Mercer volleyball team will open the 2025 campaign under the direction of first year head coach Steve Benson at the College of Charleston Tournament on Aug. 29-30.
Mercer will open up the CofC Classic with a morning match against Eastern Kentucky at 11 a.m. on Aug. 29 and will return to the court later that same day to face Appalachian State at 4:30 p.m. to close out the first day of play in Charleston. The Bears cap off the CofC Classic on Aug. 30 with an evening match against the host team, College of Charleston, at 7:00 p.m. in TD Arena.
The Bears are coming off of a historic season, becoming the winningest team in program history and the 2024 Southern Conference Regular Season Champions with an overall record of 24-7 and a 14-2 record in the SoCon. Mercer returns standout outside hitter, Sophia Henry, who earned a spot on the 2024 SoCon All-Freshmen Team and was named to the 2025 Preseason All-Conference Team. The Atlanta native played in 33 matches (116) sets while registering 226 kills (1.95 kills/set), 39 digs and seven assists. Henry also posted a season-best 19 kills in the conference tournament championship against Wofford on Nov. 24 and recorded double-digit kills seven different times. The Bears also return key defensive specialists in Abbey Havrilla and Aubri Martin who combined for 320 digs during the 2024 season.
Eastern Kentucky was picked to place third in the Atlantic Sun Conference this season along with senior middle blocker Carson Ledford being named to the Preseason All-ASUN Team. Ledford averaged 2.09 kills, 0.91 blocks and 0.21 aces per set while hitting .379, the second-best single season hitting percentage in program history. The Mountaineers of Appalachian State were picked to finish fourth in the East Division of the Sun Belt Conference's Preseason Coaches' Poll, naming two players to the SBC Preseason All-Conference Team in Addison Heidemann and Maya Winterhoff. Heidemann led the team in assists and notched a team-high 11 double-doubles throughout the season. Winterhoff led the Mountaineers last season with 319 kills (2.85 k/s) and 108 blocks (18 solo, 90 assists). The reigning CAA Regular Season and Tournament Champion Cougars of College of Charleston were picked to finish first in the CAA Coaches' Poll.
