MACON – Five-tool players. The best compliment a prospect could receive. However, the "five-tool" label would not be enough to describe Braydon Kersey's impact on the Mercer baseball program. The sophomore star dominated both sides of the ball and the College Baseball Hall of Fame named Kersey the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Week as the nation's best performing two-way athlete.
Kersey, the reigning Southern Conference Player of the Week, hit .533 (8-for-15) with two doubles, a home run, six runs batted in, four walks drawn (two intentional), a hit-by-pitch and five runs scored. Kersey made one pitching appearance and threw 1.2 innings of shutout baseball. "The Fireman" earned his fifth save of the season by striking out two hitters and limiting East Tennessee State to just one hit.Â
Kersey began the week 2-for-3 with two RBI, two intentional walks and his 21st home run of the season to lead the Bears to a 12-9 upset win over No. 3 Georgia Tech. Over the weekend, Kersey went 6-for-12 with two doubles, four RBI and two walks and made his sole pitching appearance against ETSU.
On the season, Kersey has a .325/.435/.690 slashline with 21 home runs, 66 RBI and 136 total bases. On the mound, Kersey bolsters a 5.21 ERA across 19 appearances with 24 strikeouts and five saves.
