
Baseball Ties Record For Most Wins At Home Behind Gem From Hugas

MACON – Miguel Hugas tossed a dominant seven innings to allow the Mercer Bears (38-13, 11-6 SoCon) to tie a program-best of 28 wins at home after a 5-2 victory over the VMI Keydets (27-22, 3-14 SoCon) on Saturday afternoon. The last time the Bears won 28 games at OrthoGeorgia park was in 1977.
Decisive Plays:
Mercer claimed an early 2-0 lead with a pair of RBI singles by Michael Graziano and Logan Shepherd in the bottom of the second inning. Titan Kamaka delivered another run with an RBI base knock of his own the next frame. Shepherd notched his second RBI of the day after beating out a fielder's choice that allowed Ethan Buffone to touch home plate. Kamaka launched a solo home run (6) in the fifth inning to deliver a 5-0 Mercer lead. Miguel Hugas coasted through the first half of the game and faced the minimum through the first five innings of Saturday's contest. The Keydets were able to get on the board courtesy of a Seth Buchanan solo home run in the sixth. Hugas escaped the inning without allowing any more damage before retiring the side in the seventh. Lawson Cole entered the game to start the eighth and hurled a shutout inning. Braydon Kersey stepped on the mound to start the ninth and VMI managed one run off a double play. Kersey struck out the next batter he faced and secured the 5-2 win for the Bears.

- The Bears secured their 28th win at home of the 2026 season. This matches a program-best last touched in 1977. Mercer went 28-7 at home that year. The Bears have one final chance to shatter yet another record in this already historic season.
