A 10-year coaching veteran with experience on both the collegiate and prep levels, Derrick Brown begins his first year at Mercer in 2026-27 as an assistant linebackers coach for the Bears. Brown treks to Middle Georgia from the Midwest where he spent the last four seasons on the coaching staff at Clarke University.

Brown spearheaded a defensive line unit at Clarke that yielded just more than 150 rushing per game from 2022-25, while also adding 32 forced fumbles across that stretch as well. The Pride limited opponents to just 112.2 yards per game on the ground in 2022, while also boasting a defense that forced 18 turnovers, including a dozen forced fumbles. Brown also served as the assistant director of residence life at Clarke, while also undertaking a dual role as the primary conduct officer for most college policy violations.

Prior to making the move to eastern Iowa, Brown spent three seasons (2019-21) as an assistant coach at Dublin (Ga.) High School where he helped pace the Fighting Irish to a 30-8 clip and a trio of state playoff appearances, including a 14-win season in 2019 that culminated with a state title. He also headed up the track & field program at Dublin High School.

Brown began his coaching career in 2016 as an assistant coach (linebackers) at Iowa Wesleyan where he guided the linebackers for the Tigers for three seasons.

A native of Port Orange, Fla., Brown played four seasons (2011-14) in the linebacker rotation at Union College in Barbourville, Ky. He earned his bachelor’s degree in human performance from Union in 2015.
