A veteran collegiate coach with playing experience on both the NCAA FBS and professional levels, Na’Shan Goddard begins his first year at Mercer in 2026-27, as well as his second alongside head coach Joel Taylor, as the offensive line coach for the Bears. Goddard spent the 2025 season in the same role at West Georgia.
A Super Bowl-winning player with two different National Football League teams, Goddard has more than proven his knack with player development as a coach as well. His mentees have combined to rake in 42 all-conference accolades over his already-illustrious 10-year collegiate coaching career, while eight of those student-athletes have gone on to claim all-America recognition. Two of his players have also appeared on opening day NFL rosters.
Goddard made an immediate impact in just one season at West Georgia where he led an offensive line that yielded just 5.6 tackles for loss (1.5 sacks) per game, while also paving the way for a rushing attack that chewed up 167.0 yards per game on the ground. The Wolves surrendered one or fewer sacks in six contests (0 sacks in two games), while also rushing for 180 yards or more five times.
Prior to trekking to Carrollton, Ga., he enjoyed a stellar career as the offensive line coach at South Carolina State where he played a key role in leading the Bulldogs to 34 victories from 2018-24, including a trio of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships and a 2021 Celebration Bowl victory over Jackson State. SC State’s offensive fronts were dominant across that seven-year span, allowing just 1.6 sacks per game while also spearheading a rushing game that accounted for 168.1 yards an outing. The Bulldogs showcased the nation’s sixth-best rushing attack in 2023 with more than 225 yards per game on the ground.
Goddard transitioned into the coaching world with a two-year stint as the offensive line coach at Newberry and was a part of 15 victories over the 2016 and 2017 seasons, including a 10-win campaign in his first year that culminated with a South Atlantic Conference championship and an appearance in the NCAA Division II Playoffs.
The Dayton, Ohio, native excelled as an offensive lineman at South Carolina under head coaches Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier from 2001-05, earning Southeastern Conference All-Freshman and Freshman All-America honors in 2002, while also logging a preseason All-SEC nod in 2005 as well. USC racked up more than 30 victories during his time in Columbia, S.C., including a win over Ohio State in the 2002 Outback Bowl.
Goddard signed as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants in 2006 and enjoyed a 5-year career as a part of four NFL rosters. He earned the first of two Super Bowl rings with the New York Giants in 2007, and logged another Super Bowl title while with the New Orleans Saints in 2009. He also played professionally with the Canadian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders, as well as the United Football League’s Florida Tuskers and Virginia Destroyers. He helped lead the Stampeders to an appearance in the 2012 Grey Cup, and also helped pace the Destroyers to the 2011 UFL crown.
Goddard earned his bachelor’s degree in hotel, restaurant and tourism management in 2005. He and his wife, Stacy, have two sons – NaSean and Naiden.
