A six-year coaching veteran with an array of experience on both the prep and collegiate levels, Nick Hudgens begins his first year at Mercer in 2026-27 as an assistant offensive line coach for the Bears. Hudgens spent the previous two seasons as a graduate assistant defensive coach at East Carolina.
Â
East Carolina flourished in the two seasons that Hudgens roamed the sidelines, registering a cumulative 17-9 record and a pair of Military Bowl victories, while also showcasing one of the best defensive units in the American Athletic Conference. The Pirates ranked among the nation’s top 10 teams in team tackles for loss (4th, 7.8/game) and red zone defense (7th, .705) and 3rd down conversion defense (.305) amid a 9-win campaign in 2025, while also pacing the AAC in four other defensive statistical categories as well.
Â
Prior to trekking to the northeastern North Carolina, Hudgens served as the offensive graduate assistant and interim running backs coach at Northern Colorado in 2023 as part of head coach Ed Lamb’s inaugural staff.
Â
Hudgens, a native of Columbia, S.C., coached the offensive line and defensive lines at his alma mater AC Flora in 2020 and helped lead the Falcons to a perfect 11-0 record and the first state championship in school history. He carried his magic to Arapahoe (Colo.) High School for the 2021 and 2022 campaigns, coaching the offensive and defensive lines as the Warriors claimed back-to-back Centennial League titles for the first time in school history.
Â
A four-year letterwinner on the offensive line at The Citadel, Hudgens was a part of 26 victories for the Bulldogs from 2016-19, including a 10-win season as a freshman that culminated in a Southern Conference championship and an automatic berth into the NCAA FCS Playoffs. He earned his bachelor’s degree in civil & environmental engineering from The Citadel in 2020.
