A former record-breaking collegiate wide receiver with a knack for producing in high-pressure situations, Derwin Burgess begins his first year at Mercer in 2026-27 as an assistant wide receivers coach for the Bears. Burgess joined the coaching staff in Macon after finishing up his playing career at Georgia Southern.

A four-time All-Sun Belt Conference honoree, Burgess played in 47 games (39 starts) for Georgia Southern from 2021-24 and hauled in 208 catches for 2,500 yards and 17 touchdowns. He helped pace the Eagles to 23 wins across his time in Statesboro, including an 8-win campaign in 2024 that culminated in a trip to the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.

Burgess registered a quintet of 100+-yard receiving games during his playing career, and notched a touchdown reception in 17 different games. He also registered at least one reception in the last 40 games of his career in the blue, gray & old gold.

A product of Atlanta and Riverdale High School, Burgess was named the Region 5-AAAA offensive player of the year by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution as a senior, while also picking up first team all-state laurels. He earned his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Georgia Southern in 2025.
