JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Freshman Ryan King scored in the eighth minute of overtime to lift the Mercer men's soccer team to a huge 1-0 Atlantic Sun Conference win over Jacksonville on Saturday evening at the Ashley Sports Complex.
The win ends Mercer's two-game losing streak and improves its record to 8-5-1 overall and 3-4-0 in A-Sun play. Jacksonville falls to 8-7-1 overall and 3-4-0 in conference play with the loss.
Mercer out-shot JU 14-12 on the evening and both teams attempted six corner kicks in the match.
After both teams battled to a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes of play, the game went into sudden death overtime.
In overtime, the Bears earned a corner kick in the 98th minute of the game that senior Ian Cameron put into play. The ball skipped across the box right to a waiting King who put in a shot just inside the near post to give the Bears a 1-0 win.
King led the Orange and Black with six shots in the game, while junior Darko Karamatic led the Dolphins with three attempts.
Bears goalkeeper Brett Petricek made two saves in the win to earn his fifth shutout of the season, which is the second-most in the A-Sun.
Mercer returns home next weekend to face off against two A-Sun rivals in the final weekend of conference play. The Bears face-off against Lipscomb first on Thursday, October 28, before taking on Belmont on Saturday, October 30 at Bear Field. Both contests are scheduled 7 p.m. starts, with Saturday's match featuring a Senior Day celebration.
