MACON, Ga. – Sophomores Richie Edmondson and Will Betts each scored a goal to propel the Mercer men's soccer team to a big 2-0 Atlantic Sun Conference victory over Lipscomb on Thursday evening at Bear Field.
Mercer (9-5-1, 4-4-0 A-Sun) now moves into a three-way tie for fourth in the A-Sun Standings with Lipscomb (8-8-0, 4-4-0 A-Sun) and Campbell.
Lipscomb out-shot Mercer 14-7, but most of the Bisons shots were from distance and it was Mercer who had the majority of the quality scoring chances in an action packed match.
Mercer jumped out to an early lead just two minutes into the match thanks to a goal by Edmondson, his fourth of the season. Sophomore Joey Heavner sent in a big ball that got over the Lipscomb defense and right to Edmondson, who chipped a shot over a charging Lipscomb goalkeeper to make the score 1-0.
The game would remain 1-0 in favor of Mercer going into the second half where both teams started the period by trading dangerous scoring opportunities.
Mercer got its chance when sophomore Stefan Wingo corralled a failed Lipscomb clearance and blasted a low shot that caromed off the left goal post and back into play. The Bisons looked to tie the match just minutes later when junior forward Andrew Chamberlin got through the Bears defense and fired in a shot, but Mercer goalkeeper Brett Petricek made a diving one-handed save to keep the game at 1-0.
The Orange and Black sealed the win for the home crowd in the 79th minute off a long throw set piece. Sophomore Josh Shutter sent a towering throw into the box that junior Ryan Young touched to Betts who hammered home a shot to give Mercer the 2-0 win.
Petricek tied his season-high by making six saves in the win to earn his sixth shutout of the season, tied for second-most in the A-Sun.
Mercer returns to the pitch on Saturday, October 30 when it welcomes Belmont into town for its regular season finale. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be preceded by Mercer's senior day celebration for its lone senior in the 2010 class, midfielder Ian Cameron.
