DAHLONEGA, Ga. - Thus far this spring, Mercer University men's tennis is like having a good supply of Clearasil: the team still does not have a blemish on its record in 2010.
DAHLONEGA, Ga. - Thus far this spring, Mercer University men's tennis is like having a good supply of Clearasil: the team still does not have a blemish on its record in 2010.
For the third time in as many outings, the Bears shutout an
opponent by blanking North Georgia College & State University,
9-0, on the Saints' home courts on Monday afternoon.
While NGCSU provided MU with its most difficult challenge of the
season, the outcome ended up the same as in Mercers previous
matches.
The visiting Bears did not drop a set in singles and also
swept all three doubles matches.
Freshman Peter Tauchner, from Bad Voslau, Austria
improved to 3-0 in singles by gaining the win in his first start at
the No. 1 position for the Bears. Tauscher picked NGCSU's
Luciano Paes as easily as gathering a bouquet of edelweiss
in his homeland, with the 6-1, 6-3 victory. He and teammate
Adam Hunt then battled to a hard-fought 9-8 (7-3 in the
tie-breaker) win at the No. 2 doubles slot over the Saints'
Paes and Daniel Aquilon.
Hunt was a 6-0, 6-3 victor at the No. 6 singles position over
North Georgia's Parker LaSure. Hunt is also 3-0 in singles
play this season.
Junior Evandro Rosindo (Vitoria, Brazil) cruised to
the 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 2 singles, as well as an 8-2 No. 1
doubles win with sophomore David Barton (Nottingham,
England). Barton won in straight sets at No. 4 singles over Adrien
Saulais, 6-2, 6-1, as both he and Rosindo improved to 2-0 in
singles matches.
Junior Fernando Armendaris (Quito, Equador) upped
his personal singles record to 2-0 at the No. 3 position with his
6-2, 6-3 win over Grant Patrick. Matthew Poleon
(Woodstock, Ga.), a senior with the Bears' team, rounded out
the singles winners with his 6-2, 6-1 “W” over
NGCSU's Brandon Sloan.
Poleon joined MU teammates Tauchner and Hunt with a
team-leading 3-0 mark in singles competition.
Poleon and Armendaris also teamed up at No. 3 doubles to
defeat the Saints' duo of Sloan-LeSure, 8-1, to complete the
match sweep by Mercer.
