Men's Golf Takes Sixth in the Invitational at the Ocean Course

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Mercer sophomore James Beale fired a 1-over 73 on the final day of the Invitational at the Ocean Course to help Mercer land a sixth-place finish at the event. Mercer's final day score of 301 gave the Bears a tournament total of 878, two strokes ahead of Notre Dame.
Florida captured the team title with a three-round total of 858, while the University of Alabama-Birmingham (869) was next best. South Florida (870), Maryland (871) and the College of Charleston (878) rounded out the top-five teams.
Mercer's 301 on Tuesday came in conjunction with scores of 298 and 292 in the first two rounds. The Bears finished ahead of Notre Dame (893), Davidson (894), Richmond (896), USC Upstate (896), Charleston Southern (901) and Kansas (904).
Beale's final round 73 combined with an opening round 75 and a second round 71 to place him in a tie for 13th place individually. Beale's effort at the event outpaced 59 other golfers and marked his best finish in five tournaments with Mercer.
Freshman Trey Rule took home Mercer's next-best finish, tying for 27th place individually after firing 76 on Tuesday. Rule's 76 followed back-to-back 74's in the first two rounds.
Sophomore Hans Reimers tied for 37th place overall after using 81 strokes on Tuesday. Reimers had scores of 72 and 73 in the first two rounds.
Senior Josh Cone completed his showing at the tournament with a 74 on Tuesday, slotting him in a tie for 41st place overall. On Monday, Cone booked totals of 78 and 76 in the first and second rounds.
Juniors Thomas Holmes and Alex Street both had scores of 78 on Tuesday and tied for 51st and 53rd, respectively. Holmes went 80-74 in on Monday while Street shot 77-78.
The Invitational at the Ocean Course marked Mercer's final tournament of the fall season, as the team now breaks from competitive play until the spring semester. Mercer's first event in the spring is the JU Invitational at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Dates for that event are January 30-31.
