Men's Golf Leads the Field at Frito Lay/AT&T Intercollegiate

CHOCTAW, Miss – Mercer sophomore John Gregory Joseph fired a one-under, 71 to lead the Bears in the first round of the Frito Lay/AT&T Intercollegiate hosted by Jackson State University. As a team, Mercer posted an opening round 295 to lead the 17-team field.
Mercer's opening round 295 (+7) places the team six shots ahead of second place Bethune-Cookman. Mercer was the only team to break 300 on Sunday and holds at least a ten shot lead on 14 of the other 16 teams.
Southern Illinois (304) is third and holds a three shot lead on fourth place UT Martin. Nicholls State (309) and Evansville (309) are tied for fifth place after day one.
Mercer's first round total gave the team a substantial lead over Atlantic Sun members Lipscomb (318) and Belmont (328).
Joseph's 71 placed the sophomore tied for 1st in the individual standings and matched his best 18-hole total at Mercer. Last season, Gregory posted a 71 in the final round of the Atlantic Sun championship.
Freshman Hans Reimers and junior Josh Cone also sit among the top-10 individuals entering Monday's final round. Reimers carded a 73 and is tied for fourth place while Cone's 75 placed him tied for seventh overall.
Sophomore Matt Kocolowski used 76 strokes on Sunday and is tied for 15th while junior Stefan Labuschagne signed for an 81 and is tied for 39th place.
Joseph and the Bears return to action in the final round of the event on Tuesday morning. The final round of play starts with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
