GREENSBORO, Ga. – Junior Josh Cone fired a team-low 72 in Sunday's first round of the Linger Longer Invitational at the Great Waters Golf Course. As a team, the Bears' cumulative total of 300 places the squad in a tie for ninth place with Coastal Carolina.
No. 49 Chattanooga and No. 4 Alabama are tied atop the leaderboard after collecting scores of 284 on Sunday. No. 15 Stanford is five strokes behind the leaders while No. 50 Kennesaw State and No. 13 Georgia are tied for fourth place with scores of 291.
"We really got off to a decent start, hitting it close, and just not capitalizing on those opportunities," Mercer head coach Andrew Tredway said. "It got away from us quickly from there and we just couldn't make any putts."
After 18 holes of play, Mercer is just two strokes behind Memphis for eighth place and seven strokes ahead of Furman.
Cone's even-par 72 came with its share of ups and downs as the Thomasville, Ga. native posted four bogeys and four birdies on the day. Cone's 72 slots him in an eight-way tie for ninth place individually.
Freshman Mookie DeMoss signed for a 74 on Sunday and is tied for 24th place individually while junior John Gregory Joseph used 76 strokes on Sunday and is tied for 37th place.
Sophomores Matt Kocolowski and Thomas Holmes each needed 78 strokes on Sunday and are tied for 56th place overall.
Freshmen Hans Reimers and James Beale are competing at the tournament as individuals and posted scores of 77 and 79.
"We just need to build some confidence and have a couple guys put together some solid rounds on the same day," Tredway said. "In order to do that we need to be able to make some putts inside of five feet and get the ball up and down around par fives. I really believe if we can put together one good round this team can ride that for a while."
The second round of action is slated to begin at 10:15 a.m. Monday. Visit www.golfstat.com for live scoring of the tournament.
