JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Freshman Tyler Moore threw a complete game shutout to lead North Florida to a 5-0 win over Mercer on Sunday afternoon at Harmon Stadium.
Moore, in just his second start of the season, scattered eight hits over nine innings to pick up his fourth win of the season.
Sunday's game started with some quality pitching by both starters, Mercer's Justice French and Moore. After both hurlers matched zeros over the first four innings of play, the Ospreys broke up the scoreless streak in the bottom of the fifth. Two errors in the field allowed UNF to take a 2-0 lead after an RBI groundout by freshman Alex Hernandez and an RBI single by Corey Smith.
Mercer had its chances against Moore, putting runners in scoring position with less than two outs in the third and the sixth but failed to score in either frame.
UNF added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth after an RBI groundout by freshman Shane Kennedy and an RBI single by senior Andrew Hannon made the score 4-0 in favor of the home team.
That would conclude the afternoon for French who pitched very well, but just had some tough luck behind him. The Suwanee, Ga. native allowed four runs, only two of which were earned in 5.2 innings pitched.
After the Ospreys added another run in the bottom of the seventh, Smith made sure the Bears had no chance to rally, retiring Mercer in order in the eighth and ninth to wrap up the ball game.
Junior Jacob Tanis and freshman Derrick Workman and Austin Barrett each had two hits apiece in a losing effort.
Mercer returns to the field when it welcomes No. 9 Georgia Tech into town for a mid-week contest on Tuesday evening. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Claude Smith Field.
