
Mercer Drops Series Finale To Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mercer's (35-13, 9-6 SoCon) 10-game winning streak came to an end as the Bears fell to the Samford Bulldogs (24-21, 9-6 SoCon) at Joe Lee Griffin Field on Sunday afternoon.

Samford got off to an early 1-0 lead when Trey Higgins hit a solo home run (10) in the second inning. Parker McDonald doubled the Bulldogs' lead with an RBI double (6) later in the frame. Luke Boykin gave Samford a 3-0 advantage in the fourth before Eddie Marshall hit a two-run home run (8) to cap off the scoring. Jess Ackerman took over for the Bears in the fifth inning and threw two shutout innings. Collin Ewaldsen stepped onto the mound in the seventh and hurled a perfect inning. Reid Fagerstrom, Caden Alvey and Caleb Hughes collaborated on a shutout eighth that gave the Bears a change to comeback until the very end. Braydon Kersey drew a walk, and Drew Johnson mashed a pinch-hit double to threaten the Bulldogs, however Zak Spurrier took the mound and slammed the door on Mercer's rally.
