MACON – A week removed from a game-of-the-year contender against Georgia Southern (14-34, 6-18 Sun Belt), the Mercer Bears (35-13, 9-6 SoCon) head to Statesboro, Georgia, for the conclusion of a home-and-home series against the Eagles on Wednesday night.

RHP Collin Ewaldsen (3-1, 4.19 ERA) vs. LHP Thomas Burke (1-1, 10.08 ERA)

Notables:

The last meeting between these two teams ended in jaw-dropping fashion when the Bears overcame a five-run deficit in the ninth inning. Chris Katz started the comeback with a game-tying grand slam before Eli Stephens mashed a walk-off home run the next at-bat for the final blow.
Last season, the Bears and Eagles split their home-and-home series with Mercer winning 7-6 in Statesboro. Stephens was the hero in that game as well and delivered a game-winning pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the ninth.
Georgia Southern's projected starter, Thomas Burke, started in both games against Mercer last season and started last Wednesday in Macon. The sophomore left-handed pitcher has a 10.74 ERA in four starts against the Bears.
Over the weekend, Mercer surpassed 100 home runs on the season. Braydon Kersey, the Bears' leading slugger, blasted the 100th and 101st homers by Mercer this season in a 16-8 win over Samford. The Bears are third in the nation trailing only Georgia (131) and Oklahoma State (111) in home runs.
Collin Ewaldsen is projected to make his first career start against Georgia Southern this Wednesday. The sophomore from Baxley, Georgia, has 43 career appearances out of the Bears' bullpen. Last week, the Eagles did not allow Ewaldsen to escaped the fifth inning and forced him to give up two runs off three hits.
