MACON, Ga. – Mercer senior Amiee Frutchey knocked down a team-high nine kills as the Bears dropped the volleyball season opener to Davidson, 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-19) on Friday evening. The match was played at the Winthrop Coliseum and was the opening contest of the 2011 Winthrop Classic.
Mercer (0-1) got 10-dig efforts from both senior Charlotte Harris and junior Jamie Duffy, but could not overcome a 15-kill performance by Davidson sophopmore Caroline Brown. Dating back to last season, Harris has now notched doube-digit kills in 23-straight matches.
"Right now we're playing against adversity and through injuries," Mercer head coach Noelle Rooke said. "It's going to take a little time for us to find our fit."
Frutchey added five digs and two block assists while Duffy collected a pair of kills and a block assist.
Junior Monica Sanchez dished out 17 assists and had four kills, two service aces and three digs in the loss. Sophomore Zoe Becton recorded a career-high four kills on just 10 swings.
The first set was tied a nine apiece before a Brown kill sparked a 10-3 run for the Wildcats.
The second set was knotted at 16 before Davison scored three-straight times to create separation on the scoreboard. In the final set, Mercer held an 11-10 advantage but a string of attacking errors allowed Davidson to score nine-straight points.
Davidson now leads the all-time series between the teams, 4-1.
Mercer continues play at the Winthrop Classic on Saturday, challenging Winthrop at noon and UNC Wilmington at 5 p.m.
