
Volleyball Falters at Day Two of Winthrop Classic

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Mercer volleyball team suffered a pair of 3-0 losses, first to Winthrop (25-18, 25-17, 25-14) then to UNC Wilmington (25-21, 25-20, 25-22) on the second day of the Winthrop Classic in Rock Hill S.C on Saturday.
Mercer fell to 0-3 on the season while UNC Wilmington moved to 1-2 and Winthrop stayed unbeaten at 2-0.
Freshman Caroline Carlton was named to the all-tournament team after piling up eight block assists and eight kills on the day.
Mercer junior Jennifer Katona led the team offensively, racking up 18 kills in six sets of action. Katona's classmate, Monica Sanchez dished out 49 assists while adding eight digs and a block assist in two matches.
Senior Charlotte Harris piled up 34 kills, tallying 17 digs in both contests.
Against Winthrop, Katona hammered out 11 kills with just two errors en route to a .364 hitting percentage. Freshman Caroline Carlton spiked six kills with zero errors for a team-high .429 hitting percentage.
Against UNC Wilmington, senior outside hitter Amiee Frutchey recorded a team-high eight kills on 23 attempts. Frutchey also notched eight digs in the losing effort.
Mercer returns to action in its home opener Wednesday, challenging Georgia Southern at 6 p.m.
