Volleyball Upended by Georgia Southern

MACON, Ga. – Mercer freshman Caroline Carlton and junior Jamie Duffy each had ten kills, but their effort wasn't enough to stop Georgia Southern from taking a 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-20) victory in Wednesday night's non-conference volleyball match at the University Center.
"We saw glimpses of what we can be tonight," head coach Noelle Rooke. "Caroline is really impressive with the way she has stepped up for us this season."
Mercer fell to 0-4 on the year while Georgia Southern moved to 3-2.
Carlton's first career 10-kill performance came with just two errors and 15 total attacking attempts. The Franklin, Tenn. native led all players with a .533 attacking percentage.
In addition to 10 kills, Duffy also tallied 13 digs in the loss, marking her fourth career double-double. Duffy collected her 10 kills on 19 attempts while recording just three errors.
Junior Monica Sanchez also posted a double-double, recording 31 assists and 10 digs in the loss. Sanchez's 31 assists was the first time a Mercer player has cracked the 30-assist mark in a three set match since Chelsea Gebben posted 30 against Bethune-Cookman on September 5, 2009.
Junior Charlayna Braxton hammered down six kills on 12 tries while adding a dig and an assist.
Mercer senior libero Charlotte Harris tallied 10 digs and a pair of assists on Wednesday, pushing her streak of double-digit dig matches to 25.
No Georgia Southern player had double-digit kills, but the Eagles spread their offense and finished the contest with an efficient .236 hitting percentage. Meredith Paskert led the visitors with nine kills on 21 attempts.
The Bears return to non-conference action on Friday, hosting the eighth annual Bear Brawl. Mercer kicks off the event at 1 p.m. versus Troy before challenging Tennessee State at 7 p.m.
