MACON, Ga. – Mercer sophomore Lacey Fears fired an even-par 72 on Tuesday to capture individual medalist honors and help lead the Bears to the team title at the 2011 Eat a Peach Collegiate. As a team, the Bears posted a 292 on Monday, finishing the event with a team score of 587.
Mercer's 587 was 43 strokes ahead of the next closest team, Shorter University. Armstrong Atlantic (634), Coastal Georgia (665) and Piedmont College (687) rounded out the top five teams.
Mercer's team victory marked the second-straight year the squad has captured the top spot at the event. Last season, Mercer won the tournament with a cumulative total of 594.
Fears' final round 72 came in conjunction with a 1-over 73 on Monday and gave her the top individual spot at the event for the second-straight year. Last season, Fears out dueled Shorter's Greta Lange in a playoff hole to capture the title.
All five of Mercer's team contributors finished among the top four in the individual standings. Sophomore Mary Alice Murphy and freshman Sarah Louie Brown tied each other for second place overall with two-day totals of 147.
Murphy equaled Fears' Tuesday effort with a mirroring 72 while Brown used 74 shots in the final round.
Juniors Aurelie Wiriath and Kimmy Graff tied each other for fourth place overall with tournament totals of 149. Graff turned in a 74 on Tuesday while Wiriath contributed a 75.
Alicia Poole, Keri Lynn Carson, Kaitlin Marrin and Jessica Arthur all competed as individuals.
Poole finished sixth overall with back-to-back 76's at the tournament. Senior Keri Lynn Carson improved upon her round one total by 11 strokes with a 73 on Tuesday, slotting her 10th overall.
Marrin and Arthur finished as part of a three-way tie for 11th place overall. Arthur signed for a 75 on Tuesday while Marrin booked a 78.
Mercer is back in action on October 7-9 at the LPGA Invitational hosted by Xavier. The 2011 LPGA Invitational will be held at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.
