MACON, Ga. – Mercer middle blocker Jennifer Katona spiked 10 kills and tallied three total blocks, but her effort could not stop Troy from claiming a 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-17) victory over the Bears in Tuesday night's non-conference volleyball match at Sartain Hall.
Troy's victory snapped Mercer's three-match winning streak and sent the Bears to 4-9 on the season. The Trojans moved to 10-4 on the year.
The first set featured nine tie scores and four lead changes, but the Trojans were able to break away from a 23-23 tie with consecutive kills by senior Brittany McClelland and freshman Kayla Pickart.
The second set was knotted at six before Troy scored five-straight points. Troy would not surrender that advantage for the remainder of the frame.
The third set also featured a 6-6 tie, but this time Troy was able to rattle off six-straight points to create separation on the scoreboard. Mercer could not retain an advantage following that Trojan charge.
Setters Monica Sanchez and Madeline Dolny combined for 31 assists on Tuesday night. Sanchez also recorded six digs while Dolny added two digs and had a kill in the loss.
Freshman Caroline Carlton boasted Mercer's best hitting percentage (.278) with seven kills and two errors in 18 total attempts.
Mercer returns to action on Friday, hosting its Atlantic Sun conference opener versus Lipscomb. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
