DELAND, Fla. – Mercer freshman Molly Locke notched her team-leading 12th double-double of the season to lead Mercer to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-19) victory over Stetson on Saturday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.
Mercer snapped a two-match slide and improved to 9-13 (5-7 A-Sun) while Stetson fell to 4-24 (0-11 A-Sun).
Locke was unstoppable, pounding out 14 kills with zero errors on 21 attempts. Her .667 hitting percentage marked the highest attacking efficiency for a Mercer player this season and established her sixth game with a hitting percentage greater than .300.
Her sensational effort wasn't limited to the offensive end, as she also tied for the team lead in digs (14). Junior Emily Rochefort also collected 14 digs, helping limit Stetson to a paltry .168 hitting percentage.
Locke's offensive output was enabled by the efforts of senior setter Monica Sanchez, who tallied 41 assists in the straight-sets victory. The Schaumburg, Illinois native also posted six digs and a kill in the winning effort.
Sophomore Caroline Carlton, senior Charlayna Braxton and senior Madison Petsos were all similarly adept at the net. Carlton recorded 15 kills and only three errors, while Braxton had seven kills and zero errors and Petsos had three kills with a single miscue.
Mercer jumped all over Stetson at the outset, building a 10-3 lead en route to the wire-to-wire first set victory. Both the second and third sets featured five tie scores and two lead changes.
Mercer returns home to face Jacksonville in its next outing on October 26. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
