Men's Golf Finishes Sixth at the Brickyard Collegiate

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's golf team posted its highest finish in the six-year history of the Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship on Sunday, finishing the three-day event in sixth place with a team score of 872. Mercer's sixth place finish was highlighted by junior James Beale's tie for eighth place individually, establishing Mercer's first individual top-10 at the event since its inception in 2007.
Mercer's 872 was four strokes ahead of Augusta State for seventh place and only five strokes behind both No. 35 Virginia Tech and Chattanooga for fourth place. No. 4 Georgia ran away with the team title, posting a team score of 848 to outpace No. 15 Georgia Tech by 14 strokes. No. 43 North Florida placed third with a tournament total of 865.
Mercer's team score of 286 in the final round marked the team's lowest 18-hole total since shooting 280 in the second round of the Irish Creek Collegiate on March 31, 2011.
Beale's fifth career top-10 finish was capped by a 2-under 70 in Sunday's final round, which brought his tournament total to 213 (-3). His showing at the Brickyard was a model of consistency, as he posted 41 pars in 54 holes of play, ranking second among all participants.
Junior Hans Reimers carded a 71 for the second-straight day, ending his tournament with a score of 215 and a tie for 14th place. Sophomore Trey Rule fired an even-par 72 on Sunday and tied for 31st place overall at 220.
Senior Thomas Holmes, a Macon native, wrapped up his final collegiate showing at his home course with a 1-over 73. His three-day score of 224 placed him in a tie for 50th individually.
Freshman Jeffrey Heinicka, Jr. wrapped up his performance with a 76 on Sunday and tied for 66th place at 229.
Michael Hirthler claimed Mercer's top finish as an individual, shooting 74 on Sunday to tie for 71st place overall. Seniors Alex Street and John Gregory Joseph both tied for 74th place overall with tournament scores of 233. Street shot 79 on Sunday while Gregory finished at 74.
Mercer returns to action with its final event of the fall season at the AutoTrader Collegiate Classic on October 15. The two-day event is hosted by Georgia State at Berkeley Hills Country Club.
