Men's Golf Takes 15th at the John Hayt Intercollegiate

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla.—The Mercer men's golf team booked a 15th place finish with a team score of 910 in the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at the Sawgrass Country Club Golf Course. Tuesday's final round of 293 (+5) brought the Bears within two strokes of the eventual 14th place Furman (908).
Entering day three of the tournament, the Bears sat at 15th place with 617 strokes. Central Florida led the 15-team field at 588 while North Texas, Arkansas and Tennessee entered the final round in a three-way tie for second place at 591.
No. 8 Arkansas would shoot an astounding 281 (-7) on the final day to overtake UCF for the tournament title with a total score of 872. The Razorbacks surpassed No. 17 UCF (876) and No. 13 North Florida (877) to win by four strokes. Coastal Carolina (883) was fourth while North Texas and TCU tied at 885.
Freshman Trey Rule had Mercer's best round of the tournament on Tuesday, registering three birdies and 13 pars en route to a 71. His final tournament score of 225 lifted him to a tie for 46th place individually.
Sophomore James Beale was Mercer's next best finisher with a tie for 49th place overall after posting a three-day total of 227. Hans Reimers tied for 55th overall with a tournament score of 229 while senior Josh Cone tied for 72nd after using 235 strokes at the event.
Junior John Gregory Joseph had his best round of the event on Tuesday, firing an even-par 72 to place 80th individually.
Senior Thomas Holmes competed as an individual in the event and wrapped competition with a tie for 76th. His three-round total of 236 came by virtue of two 79's and a 78.
The Bears return to competitive play in Tallahassee, Fla. at the three-day Seminole Intercollegiate hosted by Florida State on March 9-11.
