KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Mercer women's golf team finished tied for 18th place in the 33-team competition at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate. On Tuesday, the Bears recorded a 308, bringing their tournament total to 933.
Mercer finished two strokes behind the three-way tie of Akron, Georgetown and Longwood (931).
"We played better each day, and that is one of our primary goals," Mercer head coach Gary Guyer said. "Today we had a chance to go low, as we were two-under par through nine holes. Our focus will be on putting for the rest of the year, because tee to green we are as good as anybody."
Augusta State led throughout the tournament en route to a decisive victory. The Jaguars tallied a dominating overall score of 877, outpacing second placed UNC Greensboro by 22 strokes. The top five teams were rounded out by Campbell (903), Elon (903) and College of Charleston (910).
Mercer sophomore Lacey Fears finished tied for 10th overall with a score of 223. In her first 10 holes on Tuesday, Fears recorded two birdies and seven pars on her way to a final round 77. Her 10th place finish outpaced 169 other competitors.
Sophomore Mary Alice Murphy posted a team-best score of 75 in the final round to solidify an individual tie for 55th. The rest of the squad rounded out with Sarah Louie Brown's 237, Aurelie Wiriath's 246 and Kaitlin Marrin's 248.
Freshman Sarah Louie Brown stroked a 79 in all three rounds for her 91st placed individual finish in the tournament.
The Mercer women return to action on March 10-11 at the Spider Spring Break Invitational at the St. James Plantation in Southport, N.C. The two-day tournament is hosted by the University of Richmond.
