MACON, Ga. – Wet conditions caused a delayed start for the final round of the 2012 Atlantic Sun Men's Golf Championship, and when play resumed scores reflected less than ideal conditions. Mercer battled through conditions to post a 314 on Wednesday, wrapping up competition at the Legends Course of Chateau Elan in sixth place overall.
Mercer's 314 combined with scores of 303 and 297 in the first two rounds, bringing the Bears' tournament total to 914. Mercer's effort outpaced both Lipscomb (925) and Belmont (933) and was seven strokes behind Stetson for fifth place.
North Florida captured its first A-Sun Championship since 2008, wrapping up this year's event with a three-day total of 875. East Tennessee State (879) finished second while Kennesaw State (894) and Florida Gulf Coast (896) rounded out the top four teams.
Sophomore James Beale took home Mercer's top placement for the fourth straight time, tying for seventh place individually. Beale's three-round total of 221 was capped by a team-best 76 in Wednesday's final round. The Auckland, New Zealand product's finish marked his fourth straight top-10 finish.
Freshman Trey Rule signed for an 80 on Wednesday and finished in a tie for 25th place. Rule's 80 came in conjunction with scores of 76 and 74 in the opening two rounds.
Junior Thomas Holmes used 82 strokes in the third round and placed 33rd with a 56-hole score of 233. Sophomore Hans Reimers and senior Josh Cone joined Belmont's Elliot Wickenden in a tie for 34th place overall with scores of 234. Reimer's 234 featured a final round 78 while Cone shot 80.
