JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With a chance to secure the No. 2 seed and a first round bye in the upcoming Atlantic Sun Championship, the Mercer women's soccer team couldn't hold onto an early lead in an eventual 2-1 loss to Jacksonville on Sunday afternoon at Southern Oak Stadium.
Instead, Mercer (9-7-3, 4-3-2 A-Sun) will now be the No. 4 seed in the 2013 A-Sun Championship and will host No. 5 Stetson in the first round on November 2.
After both teams played to a 0-0 score going into halftime, the Bears found a goal in the early stages of the second half to take the lead.
After Dolphins keeper Sarah Sierra saved a shot from junior Lauren Gassie, senior Casey Barrett was right there to put home the rebound attempt to give Mercer a 1-0 lead.
That lead would be short lived, however, as Jacksonville used goals from Marie Weckhurst and Kaitlyn Bassett in the 64th and 69th minute, respectfully, to re-take the lead at 2-1.
Mercer nearly came up with an equalizer in the 75th minute of play, but a shot from junior MacKenzie Stewart caromed off the crossbar and out for the Bears best scoring chance the rest of the way.
Sophomore Maggie Cropp made a career-high 10 saves in goal for Mercer while Barrett appeared in her 80th career game which ranks tied for the 15th-most in A-Sun Conference history.
The game time of Mercer's A-Sun Championship first round game against Stetson on November 2 will be decided by tomorrow afternoon so make sure to check back on mercerbears.com for the up to date information.
