MACON, Ga. – In search of its fourth-straight appearance in the Atlantic Sun Championship title game, the Mercer women's soccer team came up short following a 2-0 semifinal loss to top-seeded Florida Gulf Coast on Friday evening at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
Mercer finishes the season with a 10-8-3 overall record for its fourth-straight campaign with 10 or more wins.
After an early pair of Bears corner kicks were not converted, FGCU broke up the scoreless tie in the 37th minute of play. Junior Shannen Wacker slid in a shot past Mercer goalkeeper Maggie Cropp and into the lower right-hand corner of goal to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Another corner kick by the Bears triggered a FGCU counter attack which led to its second and final goal of the contest. Freshman Tabitha Tindell collected a perfect give-and-go pass from Wacker and slipped a low shot past Cropp to make the final score 2-0.
Cropp made three saves in the match for Mercer while Eagles netminder Brittany Brown notched one save in the win.
Friday night's contest represented the final game for five seniors on the 2013 squad including Casey Barrett, Jordan Sink, Sadie Curry, Nikki Atkinson and Nadja Kolliesuah. This group helped Mercer to 43 wins over their four years in Macon and the program's first-ever A-Sun Championship title back in 2010.
