
Mercer Opens A-Sun Play with 3-1 Win over Northern Kentucky

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's soccer team used a career night from freshman Maddie Clark to earn a 3-1 win over Northern Kentucky in its Atlantic Sun Conference opener on Friday evening at Bear Field.
Clark spearheaded a Mercer (6-4-1, 1-0-0 A-Sun) attack that scored three or more goal in a game for the fifth time this season and are a perfect 5-0 in those contests.
The Bears win over Northern Kentucky (4-5-1, 0-1-0 A-Sun) tonight improves their record to 4-1-1 in A-Sun openers dating back to the 2008 season.
Friday night was all about Clark, however, as the Peachtree Corners, Ga. product tallied a career high five points on two goals and one assist.
Clark assisted on Mercer's first goal of the game collected by junior Brianna Stampler in the seventh minute of play to give the home team an early 1-0 lead.
Clark would take over the scoring from there, netting two goals over the next 27 minutes of action to give the Bears a 3-1 lead going into halftime.
Sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Cropp did the rest from there, overcoming an own goal in the first half to make seven saves on the night to pick up the win.
Stampler also recorded a multi-point performance against NKU, her fourth of the season, by tallying three points on a goal and an assist.
Mercer returns to the field on September 29 when it concludes its seven-game homestand against Lipscomb. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Bear Field.
