MACON, Ga. – Freshman Claire Walizcek and sophomore Hannah Noon combined for 21 assists on Saturday as the Mercer volleyball team fell to Wofford, 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-20) in Southern Conference play at Hawkins Arena.
Mercer's second-straight loss dropped the team to 4-11 (1-2 SoCon) while Wofford won its second-straight road match and moved to 9-10 (2-1 SoCon).
Walizcek added a pair of digs to her stat line while Noon chipped in two digs and two service aces in the loss. Leading the way offensively for Mercer was sophomore Jordan Gollon, who's team-leading .455 hitting percentage featured six kills with only a single attacking error.
Wofford used a 6-1 run early in the first frame to assume an 11-6 lead. The Bears were able to get back within four of the Terriers moments later, but the visitors were able to put together a string of three-straight points late in the set to maintain control.
In the second set, Wofford scored three-straight points to break open a 12-9 lead that forced Mercer head coach Damian Elder to use a timeout. The Bears scored the first two points out of the break, but Wofford fired back with an 8-2 surge to put the set away.
In the final set, Elder called a timeout once again as his team faced a 20-17 deficit. The tactic worked, as a kill by Gollon out of the break sparked a 3-0 Mercer surge that knotted the match. The Terriers had the last laugh, however, ending the stanza on a 4-1 run to secure the victory.
Freshman Emily Krogman finished one kill short of a season high, putting down five with only two errors on 12 attempts.
Mercer returns to SoCon play at Samford on October 7. First serve in Birmingham, Alabama is slated for 7 p.m.
